The Phosphating process

The Phosphate machines are used to treat parts and converting certain metals into strong, adherent and insoluble metal phosphates. 

The phosphating process creates a rust resistant layer and gives a surface ready for whichever coating is to be applied. The phosphating solutions that are used in our machines, usually consist of iron or zinc phosphates that are dissolved in dilute phosphoric acid.

In simple terms, once this solution is applied to the part, the reaction between the phosphoric acid and metal creates a metallic coating that helps with preparation for painting and to stop the metal corroding.

As you can see in the before and after pictures, this reaction creates a metallic colour to the original metal part.

The Phosphating process that is used in the Vixen machines consist of a three-stage cycle.

Stage 1 – Hot wash with solution

The phosphating solution is heated and sprayed onto the metal surface of the component. This helps to remove any oil or grease through emulsifying and converts the metal part into an iron phosphate coating. This creates a surface ready for painting and creates a resistance to corrosion.

Stage 2 – Hot rinsing

The metal parts are then rinsed in water to remove any excess solution.

Stage 3 – Hot passivation

The passive solution is added with de-mineralised water to rinse the parts to ensure a complete coating for any paint to adhere to the part. This stage is important to prevent air build-up and extra corrosion resistance.

Which machine is for you?

There are two types of model sizes that Vixen produces, the Phoswash and the Phosphating machine. Both machines are compact and use minimal floor space.

The Phosphating machine is the biggest out of the two and depending on the amount of parts, the basket sizes can range from one to three metres.

The Phoswash unlike the Phosphating machine, is manufactured to fit seamlessly into smaller areas.

All Vixen’s phosphating machines are fitted with an electric warm air-dry assist, the purpose of which is to maintain the temperature inside the wash chamber and to assist with flash drying. Phoswash machines are ideally suited to metal fabrications which need pre-treatment prior to coating.
